We have a favorite picnic site along the South Toe River at Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area. One summer an enormous hemlock had fallen during a storm, pretty much on our usual spot. The Forest Service had cut the log into sections to haul out, I helped them by bringing a couple of them home. Counting growth rings the tree was 137 years old; the inner rings are less than a millimeter apart. It's a delightfully quirky wood with lots of character and I plan to do more bowls with it, lots of possibilities.
